Perth's last fully in-house working tailoring house.
Founded in Perth in 1982 by the Pham family.
Three generations of working tailors.
One Perth workroom.
A house is only as good as the hands within it.
A tailoring house is not defined by its name, its reputation or the person standing at its door.
It is defined by the people within it.
Founded in Perth in 1982 by the Pham family, Perth Tailoring Co has grown through three generations of working tailors. More than four decades later, the house remains family-owned, with its craftsmanship carried forward by a dedicated team of cutters, pattern makers, dressmakers, tailors and specialist garment technicians.
Our reputation belongs to their work. And our future depends upon it.
Many disciplines. One shared standard.
Behind every garment is a collective of specialists whose knowledge has been developed through decades of practice.
Each discipline requires its own understanding of cloth, structure, proportion and the human form. What distinguishes a working tailoring house is not simply the presence of these skills, but the way they come together.
Master pattern cutters in menswear.
Specialists responsible for interpreting body geometry, developing individual patterns and guiding the construction and fitting of tailored menswear.
Master cutters in womenswear.
Experienced specialists in women's garment design, pattern development, construction, fitting and the demands of complex silhouettes.
Dedicated working team.
A collective of dressmakers, alteration specialists, sewing technicians and makers responsible for constructing, correcting and finishing the work of the house.
The cutter begins the work. The makers bring it to life.
No single person makes a tailoring house. It is the combined judgement of its people, their respect for one another's skills and their shared responsibility for the finished garment that gives the house its strength.
The responsibility of carrying it forward.
The name of a tailoring house may endure for generations. Its standards must be upheld every day.
Today, Anthony Van Pham continues the family's work, leading Perth Tailoring Co with a commitment to traditional tailoring disciplines and the technical knowledge developed across generations.
A multiple-time recipient of Bespoke Tailor of the Year honours, Anthony has developed an international clientele through his work in bespoke tailoring, garment construction and body geometry.
His commissions have taken him beyond Perth, serving clients throughout Australia and internationally, including those who arrange private consultations across state and national borders.
Yet the reputation of Perth Tailoring Co has never rested upon one individual. Anthony's responsibility is to preserve the standards established before him, support the specialists working alongside him and ensure that the knowledge within the house continues to develop.
The house was here before any one of us. Our responsibility is to leave it stronger for those who follow.
The work remains here.
Perth Tailoring Co is distinguished by the depth of its in-house technical capability.
Our Perth workroom brings together the disciplines required to develop, construct, fit, alter and finish garments, from traditional bespoke tailoring to specialist alterations and complex garment reconstruction.
At the beginning of a bespoke commission is the cutter. A true cutter does more than record measurements. The cutter interprets the body, its posture, balance, proportions and movement, then translates that understanding into an individual garment pattern.
From there, the work passes through the hands of experienced makers, whose construction, fittings, corrections and finishing give the garment its final form.
This continuity of knowledge matters. The people responsible for a garment understand not only how it should look, but how it has been designed, how it is constructed and how it should behave when worn.
The client sees the garment being made because it is being made here.
Explore Custom Tailoring ↗An archival glimpse of the family's working environment, where the knowledge later carried into Perth Tailoring Co was developed. Among the memories preserved in this film is a young Anthony waiting for his parents in the family factory.
From an idea to a garment.
Before Perth Tailoring Co was established in 1982, the Pham family owned and operated a substantial apparel design and manufacturing operation.
The work extended beyond sewing finished garments. It encompassed design interpretation, technical development, pattern making, prototyping, production and the practical understanding required to transform an idea into clothing.
Sometimes the starting point was little more than a designer's sketch. The family had to understand what that garment was intended to become, then resolve the proportions, fabric behaviour, structure and construction necessary to bring it into being.
This experience taught the family to understand garments from both directions: how a garment is created, and how an existing garment can be analysed, opened, altered, reshaped or reconstructed.
That knowledge came back into the environment of a working tailoring house.
The black-and-white film preserved here belongs to that earlier chapter of the family's life. It records more than machinery, worktables and a manufacturing operation. It preserves a place where the family's professional knowledge and everyday life existed together.
For Anthony, who appears in the film as a young child waiting for his mother and father, it is also a personal memory of the people and the work that came before him.
Traditional tailoring remained the foundation. Design and manufacturing broadened the knowledge built upon it. That experience continues to inform the way Perth Tailoring Co understands garments today.
Three generations of working tailors.
The language of the work has remained familiar across three generations of the Pham family: tape, chalk, shears, canvas, baste, balance, fitting, pressing and correction.
The tools themselves are simple.
The judgement behind them takes a lifetime.
The trade was never carried by one visible person alone. Behind the person meeting the client were the people cutting, sewing, pressing, learning and making, many of whose contributions were never seen from the front of the shop.
That remains true of a working tailoring house today.
The shield carried by our family has now passed into its fifth generation. We do not regard that history as a claim to status.
That inheritance is not a title. It is a responsibility.
What was taught to us should remain worthy of being taught to those who follow, and the people doing the work remain part of that continuity.
Five generations carrying the shield.
The inherited crest represents continuity, stewardship and the responsibility of one generation to the next.
Recognition follows the work.
Across more than four decades, Perth Tailoring Co has earned recognition for its contribution to tailoring, bespoke craftsmanship and specialist garment services.
These distinctions carry the name Perth Tailoring Co. But behind that name are the people whose work made them possible.
The recognition belongs to the house because the work belongs to its people.
Trusted with the work of international fashion houses.
Perth Tailoring Co provides authorised garment services for international fashion houses, applying specialist construction knowledge, fitting and alteration expertise to garments requiring considered technical work.
Such work requires an understanding of different garment constructions, materials, finishing methods and design intentions, together with the judgement to preserve the integrity of the original garment.
Fashion-house identities are displayed in connection with Perth Tailoring Co's authorised garment services.
The trade continues by practising it.
The pattern table, cutting table, fitting room, machines and pressing boards are not scenery around Perth Tailoring Co.
They are the business.
For our family, respecting the trade means continuing to practise it, continuing to learn from it and leaving it worthy of the generation that follows.
Our parents established the foundations. Generations of tailors and makers have contributed to what the house has become.
Today, its reputation remains in the hands of those who continue the work.
What we pass on must be worthy of it.
